Common Ground
Season 3 Ep 5 - Now Available on Hulu.
In this episode, I was excited for the opportunity to get back to my roots directing sports-based content. In one of my favorite scenes I've ever directed, a friendly football game takes a competitive turn. In this scene, I was careful to pay close attention to constructing the tension of the pre-snap dynamic. Even in a lighthearted scenario like this one, it was important to highlight the interplay present before every snap in nearly every iteration of the game (sports). This episode also gave me the space to direct the dramatic, slow-moving, and deep relationship dynamic that has been my specialty throughout my career. As well as a cool, sexy nightclub, and of course, the brotherly dynamic at the core of the series' story.
Spaghetti Junction
Season 3 Ep 9 - Now available on Hulu
A very exciting episode to work on as a storyteller. I was captivated by a script that presented multiple opportunities for me to showcase my camera movement and timing skills. Whether it was employing a single dolly shot to cover a medium-sized kitchen scene master, or strategically timed Steadicam moves to subtly emphasize moments and particular beats in one of the show's main couples' biggest series moment.
In one of the opening scenes, I utilized camera movement as the audience watched, transitioning from a lighthearted father-son moment to a dramatic encounter between strangers. I achieved this seamlessly without cutting, using just one shot of each of the men in the scene. Check it out!
Tough Love
Season 2 Ep 9 - Now available on Hulu
In my directorial debut, I was thrown into the deep end, directing what would turn out to be the season's most dramatic episode. In this episode, my focus was on how I used space, distance, and barriers to tell the story. In one of the opening scenes, in particular, I separated the estranged couple by shooting along the top of a fence, creating a physical/metaphorical divide between them. As the dynamics of the scene shifted, so did the amount of space each character occupied within the frame.
In another scene, I used an ultra-wide shot of a character, just emerging from a traumatic moment, sitting alone in a park to dramatize his sense of isolation. Transitioning from an intimate conversation captured on long lenses to a sad, lonely moment, I was excited to illustrate the emotional blunt force trauma he had just experienced with a visually jarring juxtaposition.
